Canberra

Freedom of speech is the foundation of every free society. It is the right that allows Australians to question those in power, challenge ideas, and speak openly without fear of government censorship.

Yet across Australia, governments have expanded restrictions on political expression, introduced new speech laws, and handed themselves greater powers over what Australians can say and who can say it. Freedoms are rarely taken all at once, they are eroded gradually, one law at a time.

On 30 August, Australians from every background will come together to defend one simple principle: in a democracy, no government should decide which political opinions are acceptable.

Whether you agree on every issue or not, protecting free speech protects everyone’s right to participate in public debate.

For Free Speech.
For Australia.
